Hair & nail diseases

Our treatment is not only hands-on, but also smart.

Diseases of the nails or hair can occur in isolation or as a symptom of another skin disease.

Hair diseases

Particularly common:

  • Hair loss
  • Increased hair growth

Irreversible forms of hair loss also occur in the context of other diseases (e.g. lupus erytematodes). In all cases, a precise diagnosis of the cause is essential for successful treatment.

Hair loss

People normally lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. This is not normally noticeable as new hair grows back at the same time. Hair loss occurs when new hair does not replace the hair that has fallen out.

Hair loss is typically related to one or more of the following factors:

  • Family history(heredity)
The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition that occurs with age. This condition is known as androgenetic alopecia, male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss. It usually occurs gradually and in predictable patterns - receding hairline and bald patches in men and thinning hair along the scalp in women.
  • Hormonalchanges andconditions
A variety of conditions can cause permanent or temporary hair loss, including hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and thyroid problems.
  • Medications andsupplements
Hair loss can be a side effect of certain medications, such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout and high blood pressure.
  • A very stressful phase of life
Many people experience generalised hair loss several months after a physical or emotional shock. This type of hair loss is temporary.
  • Hairstyles and treatments
Excessive hair styling or hairstyles that pull your hair tight, such as braids, can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. Hair treatments with hot oil and perms can also cause hair to fall out. If scarring occurs, hair loss can be permanent.

Your path to healthy skin

Diagnosis

An examination and correct diagnosis by our specialist is crucial for successful treatment.

As a diagnostic basis, we examine and assess your scalp thoroughly. In the case of hair loss, we usually carry out a blood test to determine or rule out deficiency symptoms (e.g. vitamin deficiency).

Treatment

Our treatment approach varies depending on the origin of your hair condition. Hair loss can often be treated locally and effectively with Minodixil solutions, vitamin capsules or tablets. In this way, deficiencies or hormonal factors can be balanced out.

Light therapy, laser treatment or PRP treatment (therapy with platelet-rich plasma) also show good results. We are sure to find the best way for you.

Nail diseases

There are many different forms of nail disease. Most of them severely impair the quality of life of those affected.

Particularly common diseases:

  • Infections (nail fungi)
  • Inflammation of the nail bed
  • Ingrowth of the nail into the skin
  • Growth disorders
  • Discolouration

Even if most of the diseases are not very threatening, they are still unpleasant and often painful for those affected. Our dermatologists help your nails to recover through professional diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Diagnosis

First, we analyse your medical history in a detailed personal consultation. The first step is to analyse your symptoms (e.g. itching). In the second step, we discuss whether the nail disease could be related to other illnesses (e.g. psoriasis) or the use of medication. In the final step, we analyse psychological factors, such as your stress levels over the last few months.

The treatment of the nail disease depends on the diagnosis:

Nail fungus

Application of medical nail polish in combination with laser therapy

Ingrown nail

Minimally invasive procedure in which a small strip of nail is removed and sclerotherapy is used to prevent it from growing back

Nail psoriasis (psoriasis)

Drug treatment or laser therapy
